IELTS preparation: the best way to prepare for the IELTS exam

IELTS stands for international English language testing system, it consists of listening, reading, writing and speaking section. Candidates will score on a band of 1 to 9, where 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest possible score. Whether someone is taking IELTS to study at a university in an English speaking country or taking it to demonstrate his/her proficiency in English for a job,  he/she will need to score at least 7 band.

Anyone can use these strategies to prepare for IELTS:

  • start studying 6 to 8 weeks prior to the test date, and when he/she feels that his/her English communication skills have progressed enough to take the exam,  then book it. But they have to make sure that they give themselves time of at least 6 weeks to study for the exam. This will help them that they have enough time to prepare for the exam and they don’t have to attempt it again.
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses to decide what to focus on- consider all four sections while evaluating strengths and weaknesses and then decide what he/she should focus on. For example, if they are good at reading and writing English, but they have more difficulty engaging in conversations,  then they might want to practice listening and speaking section.
  • Practice English speaking skill as much as possible. In the speaking section there are three rounds, the second round will be a cue card round in which the candidate will have to speak for 2 minutes at least. Also speaking section will bean interactive session, for that purpose candidate should practice English speaking very often.
  • Listen to English for practising listening section: the listening section of IELTS test lasts for 30 minutes, it consists of four sections which includes two monologues and two conversations between different English native people. To prepare for the listening section, candidate should get familiar with different types of accents. Listen to English native speakers everyday to prepare for the test.
  • Start reading daily: in the reading section, time provided will be 60 minutes in which the candate will have to attempt 3 passages containing 40 questions. For general reading module the texts are from topics such as the workplace, social settings,  and everyday reading, such as newspaper or magazine texts. The academic reading section will include text that the candidate might encounter during a university course.

    • Blogs
    • Websites
    • Magazines
    • Newspaper
  • Start practising writing: the writing portion of the IELTS is 60 minutes long and contains 2 questions. It will be letter writing and essay writing for general module. Whereas for academic module it will be a report writing and essay writing. And for IELTS the candidate should write up to a specified word limit to achieve a good score.
